Have you tasted the African sausage roll yet? How about learning how to make one? The sausage roll is a very popular snack in West Africa. If you’ve prepared the Nigerian meat pie or chicken pie, you would know that the pastry used for sausage rolls is quite similar to that of meat pie and chicken pie. Sausage rolls are made up of pastry dough wrapped around a slice of well-seasoned sausage meat. In fact, if you lived in Nigeria in the 90s, you will know about the brand of sausage rolls. They are usually sold by street vendors, and in most cases, we complement them with a drink (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or la casera). No doubt, this is usually satisfying, and it always feels as though you’ve just had a full course meal. Want to give this a try anytime soon? Here is how to make the African sausage rolls.
Ingredients for making the African Sausage Rolls
The ingredients for making the sausage roll recipe include; four tablespoons of margarine, two and a half cups of plain flour, one egg, one tablespoon of baking powder, six to eight tablespoons of water, one small finely chopped onion, two green onions, two tablespoons of sugar, and finally, cayenne pepper to taste.
How to Make the African Sausage Rolls
Add the Flour, Baking Powder, Salt, And Margarine in A Bowl
Get a deep or large bowl (depending on the quantity you want to make), and add your flour, baking powder, salt, margarine, as well as butter. After doing this, use the tip of your finger to rub the fat into flour. Continue with this, until a crumbly texture is formed.
Afterward, add a small amount of water. Do this at a time, until you are sure a stiff dough has been formed.
Knead the Dough
It’s time to knead the dough for a few seconds, up to a minute, and put it aside. You shouldn’t overwork the dough.
Done with that? You can now season the sausage with the available stock cube, and it together thoroughly.
Roll Out the Pie Dough
Roll out the pie dough to a rectangle of about 1/6th to 1/8th of an inch thick. Also, don’t forget to trim the rough edges of the pastry. When you are done with that, you can then scoop the sausage meat, and form it into a log. Ensure you roll it over until it overlaps a little bit. Again, trim off the excess pastry.
Cut the Rolled Pie
You can cut the rolled pie into the desired length, after which you arrange the rolls into a pre-greased and floured pan. Done this? You can now make a decoration over the rolls. Use a knife to make a mark on the pie, and if that doesn’t work for you, you can use a fork to poke it gently.
Make the Egg Wash
Your sausage roll is almost ready. What you need to do next is to make the egg wash. Whisk together, one egg and one tablespoon of water, then brush this over the surface of the sausage rolls. Bake in a 350°F pre-heated oven. You can do this for about thirty to thirty-five minutes.
Serve and Enjoy!
You already know what’s next. You can serve hot or warm, and enjoy.
